Group Exchange

GROUP DISCUSSION #1
In conversation with Joanna Kotze,
Omagbitse Omagbemi, Liyabuya Gongo, Alain Sinandja, Megumi Kokuba, Yebel Gallegos, Sarah Beth Oppenheim, Bashaun Williams, and Nic Lincoln.
Recorded on April 10, 2022

This is an edited version of a conversation between Joanna and eight of the twelve LDDD participants. It was a deep discussion that covered a range of topics including what it was like to learn material from each other on video and also pass on material, and what it felt like to share personal stories in the interviews. The artists also talk about what inspires them, what it feels like to be creatively stuck, how they continue to incorporate and learn from training and artistic lineages, and the future of the LONG DISTANCE DANCE DIALOGUES project.

Below is the entire movement exchange between all thirteen dancer/choreographers connected in one relay. On the left side of the screen is the person who originated the movement. On the right is the person who was given material to learn and re-create. Sound is by Ryan Seaton.

*It is recommended that you wear headphones while watching/listening. Ryan’s score tracks each dancer sonically by panning the sound from right ear to left ear as the dancer moves from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen.

This project is commissioned in part by the American Dance Festival (ADF).
